20x Intel Xeon Silver 4114 — Wall Art
September 2024. I was watching an eBay auction I had no business winning — 20 Intel Xeon Silver 4114 processors, pulled from a decommissioned server, listed as a single lot. I kept bidding, kept winning rounds, and when it ended I had 20 server CPUs headed to my door for $20 flat. One dollar each.
The 4114 launched in 2017 as part of Intel’s Skylake-SP Xeon Scalable lineup — same LGA 3647 socket as the W-3175X, 10 cores, 20 threads. At launch a single one retailed around $694. I have 20 of them. That’s roughly $13,880 of server silicon for the price of a large pizza, because they were being pulled from production and replaced, so the whole lot was basically scrap value.
Same story as the DDR2 wall art: 20 CPUs with nowhere to go and a piece of scrap wood. Laid out the grid, mounted them with residue-free wall tape, four columns by five rows. Every one is a functional 10-core server CPU. The LGA 3647 package is big enough that they fill the frame properly. Looks insane on a wall — that was the goal.
20x Intel Xeon Silver 4114 — LGA 3647, 10C/20T, ~$694 each at launch. Bought for $20 total. Scrap wood, wall tape, hanging in Redlands.
