128 Sticks of DDR2 ECC — Wall Art
It was 2021. I was 14, broke, and addicted to eBay auctions. I ended up on a listing for 128 sticks of 1GB DDR2 ECC server RAM, no reserve, low starting bid. I said screw it and bid $20. I won for $21.73 — suddenly the owner of 128GB of DDR2 ECC with absolutely zero plan.
I gave a bunch away — brought a stack to my school’s lab tech and he genuinely freaked out. Those are probably still running in a school computer somewhere in the IE. But I had a crapton left, and eventually started thinking about what to actually do with a few of them. My grandpa had a scrap piece of wood sitting around. In 2023 we figured out a layout and built a simple frame together — 18 sticks mounted in two columns like a grid.
People walk into the room and do a double take every single time. It’s one of my favorite things I own, and it cost about $3 worth of RAM. The $21.73 auction was one of the best financial decisions I’ve ever made — not because the RAM was useful, but because it became this.
128x 1GB DDR2 ECC — $21.73, 2021. Wall art built 2023 with grandpa. 18 on the wall, the rest under a bed.
