128 Sticks of DDR2 ECC for $21.73
It was 2021. I was 14, broke, and absolutely addicted to eBay auctions.
I don’t even remember what I was originally searching for. But somehow I ended up on a listing for 128 sticks of 1GB DDR2 ECC server RAM and my brain just… stopped working. Someone had pulled these out of a decommissioned server rack and thrown the whole lot up for auction. No reserve. Starting bid was low.
I said screw it. I bid $20.
I won for $21.73.
I was now the owner of 128 gigabytes of DDR2 ECC RAM, 14 years old, sitting in Redlands, with absolutely zero plan.
The Problem With Winning
128 sticks of DDR2 ECC is a lot of RAM when you have no server to put it in.
They showed up in a big anti-static tray, packed in rows, looking like something out of a data center dumpster. Beautiful in a weird way. Completely useless to me at the time.

So I started giving them away. My school’s lab tech — I brought him a stack one day and he genuinely freaked out. Like, full-on couldn’t believe it. Those sticks are probably still running in some school computer somewhere in the IE. That felt good.
But I still had a crapton left. Some are under my bed right now. I genuinely don’t know what to do with them.
The Wall Art
At some point I started thinking about what to actually do with a few of them. Not run them — just display them. These sticks are from a different era of computing. DDR2 ECC, gold contacts, little yellow warning labels still on them. They look cool. They deserve better than a box.
My grandpa had a scrap piece of wood sitting around. In 2023 we got to talking, figured out a layout, and built a simple wooden frame together. Nothing fancy — just clean cuts, a wire hanger on the back, and 18 sticks of RAM mounted in two columns like a grid.
Hung it on the wall.

It looks exactly as unhinged as I hoped. People walk into the room and do a double take every single time. It’s genuinely one of my favorite things I own — and it cost me about $3 worth of RAM.
The Rest of Them
I’ve still got somewhere between 80 and 90 sticks under my bed. Open to ideas. If you want some, reach out — I’ll probably just give them away at this point. They’re not getting faster sitting in a box.
The $21.73 auction was one of the best financial decisions I’ve ever made. Not because the RAM was useful. Just because it became this. If this is your kind of thing, I did the same thing with 20 server CPUs.
128x 1GB DDR2 ECC sticks — sourced 2021, eBay auction, $21.73 total. Wall art built 2023. 18 on the wall, a bunch at a school lab somewhere, the rest under a bed in Redlands.
